Interpreting Nature: Imaginings of Nature in India, Past and Present

This project examines Indian expressive traditions' imaginations of nature, the interpretations of the relationship between human and environment, and the forms these interpretations take. It also looks at how Indian culture views the more-than-human world, the links between these imaginations and the way we treat nature, and the role of culture and human subjectivity in shaping our relationship with the environment. The project will also consider the current ecological crisis and what re-imaginings of nature need to take in light of this. Special focus is on the relationship in literary, musical and dramatic arts, and the links between these artistic expressions and natural history, environmental policy, and ecology.
